Invited to vote on the question of their union affiliation, a majority of membres of the Heritage Faculty Association chose to become affiliated with the Fédération nationale des enseignantes et des enseignants du Québec (FNEEQ-CSN). This adds to an already important increase in membership that the FNEEQ-CSN has enjoyed since the start of the current academic year through the ongoing affiliation campaign in unions that were members of the Fédération autonome du collegial (FAC).

Members of the Dawson Teachers' Union vote to affiliate with the FNEEQ-CSN
By a two-to-one margin, members of the Dawson Teachers' Union voted in a referendum yesterday to disaffiliate from the Fédération autonome du collégial (FAC) and to join the Fédération nationale des enseignantes et des enseignants du Québec (FNEEQ-CSN).

FNEEQ is glad to be associated with the Centre international de solidarité ouvrière (CISO), who published, together with the Coalition québécoise contre les ateliers de misère (CQCAM) and the Coalition étudiante trans-actions responsables (CETAR), a thematic guide on adopting and implementing a responsible purchasing policy in higher education institutions (RPP).
Launched at a press conference in Quebec city and supported by the Syndicat des chargées et chargés de cours de l'Université Laval (SCCCUL), the guide is now available on CISO's website. Ronald Cameron FNEEQ president and board member of CISO was present at the event .
The guide proposes a step-by-step approach to cegep and universities stakeholders who want to implement a Responsible Purchasing Policy (RPP) in their institution. It defines responsible purchasing ideas within the legal frame and obligations of these institutions. It identifies mechanisms that must be set in place to allow the development and adoption of a sustainable development policy. It also integrates social principles of sustainable development based on fundamental labour rights as defined by the International Labour organization (ILO).

FNEEQ considers proposed budget solutions unsuitable for population needs
The Fédération nationale des enseignantes et des enseignants du Québec (FNEEQ-CSN) worries about the strategic choices made by the canadian government concerning Quebec population. « Two billions for colleges and universities infrastructures is one thing, but 0$ for post-secondary education is unacceptable ! » deplored FNEEQ president Ronald Cameron. It worths noting that the sums invested in concrete are not even thought as sustainable investments. « With likewise orientations, we are condemned to stay behind in terms of sustainable development » adds again FNEEQ president.
Quebec teaching unions denounce Ontario's interference in collective bargaining
The Ontario government is passing up a chance to improve teaching conditions at York University by legislating an end to the strike by the university's contract faculty and teaching, research and graduate assistants, says Ronald Cameron, the president of the Fédération national des enseignantes et enseignants du Québec (CSN), which represents both sessional lecturers and teaching assistants in Quebec.

Yesterday Ontario's McGuinty government introduced back-to-work legislation to end the on-going strike of 3 200 contract faculty, teaching assistants, and graduate assistants represented by CUPE 3903. We ask students, staff and faculty to join us for a solidarity demonstration on Wednesday to show your support for the collective bargaining process and against the dangerous precedent set by legislative interference. National Week of actions in education
Building a Poverty-Free Quebec is a new campaign intended to demonstrate our common desire to make Quebec into a poverty-free society and to get the Quebec National Assembly to commit itself, in the name of human rights, to act here and now against poverty. After having received 60 000 signed cards, the Collectif’s members decided in November to extend the campaign until March 31st, 2009. And to reinforce the campaign, they decided to link with the issues of education sectors. So, during the last week of January, a blitz of petition signing is going, based on the goals of the campaign Commom Mission in education.

Canada refused to allow entry to Dr. William Ayers
Canadian Association of University Professors (CAUT) is writing to object to the refusal by the Canadian Government to allow Dr. William Ayers, Distinguished Professor of Education at the University of Illinois-Chicago, entry in Canada. Professor Ayers has been invited by the University of Toronto to give a public lecture. He was also scheduled to meet education representatives and interviewed on CBC. The actions of your border officials in denying entry to this eminent academic brings disrepute to Canada and shows that your government has little regard for academic freedom. As a very engaged student in United States in the 1960’s, he challenged the American government and was arrested on various occasions. Professor Ayers was never convicted of a felony or any equivalent charge that could be used to justify his exclusion from Canada. Also, CAUT note that Sarah Palin demeaned in the American presidential election was part of her efforts to attack Barack Obama.
